Once in a Village...

ORE ORU OORILE : Once in a village

All the children of the "Kadha Club" assembled together. "Pattu grandma" what is spicy today? asked the kids.

Pattu grandma was very serious. Please ! Please why are you mum sweet grandma! Are we making a mess? asked the children.

"Childrens" No jokes! said pattu grandma with a stern voice. No more complaints from your parents about your disinterest in studies. As there is story time, youth is the time for educating, reforming, tuning your life with the morals and thicks of life.

Basically, children love pattu grandma for her tonal modulations and depth in her presentations.

Though they like to stop studies for the sale of play, they are extremely punctual in pattu's session.

Pattu grandma raised her voice. Hey kids ! Be quite. I'm going to start the stroy.

Come on! Let us all sing together.

Form a circle and clap your hands according to the rhythm of this piece.

Everybody repeat, said pattu grandma " Odhamal Orunalum Iruka Vandam"(Learn each and every day) Children were very happy.

Chintu, a 8 year old was so dull.

He is a visually challenged boy with partial sight.Pattu grandma always appreciates his interest in studies.

Pattu asked "Why Chintu? Are you having a bad tooth ache?

No Pattu grandma, chintu cried. I lost my Tamil book couple of days back.

My teacher will punish me.My mom is not having money to buy. I do not know what to do.

Pattu grandma consoled him, "Chintu pappu", I will buy for you do not cry- she patted him.

Mintu asked "where is the story" Pattu grandma started.

This is a beautiful story based on the Proverb "Odhamal Orunalum" ... said by Aouvaiyaar a famous tamil poet in ancient Tamil history.

In the village of Ar...... there was a boy called Nandu who was in junior class.

Nandu was a sweet boy who helped his mother in domestic works, looked after cows and goats so beautifully but never wanted to study.

Nandu's mother was worried as he did not go to school regularly. He joined with lazy boys and started playing cards and marbles.

Nandu's friend chandu was a good boy who helped him in studies though Nandu made fun of him as he was a visually challenged boy.

Nandu's mom liked Chandu and helped him out with his problems.

Nandu never liked Chandu as he was cleverer than him.

It was quaterly examination time.Nandu did not know anything and tried to copy from Chandu which the teacher noticed and started to punish him.

Chandu said,"Miss please listen to me.Nandu could not prepare well because he was attending to me when I was down with Viral fever.

I instigated him to copy.

"Please punish me".

Nandu was shocked and reacted immediately.

He said Teacher please forgive me, I'm ashamed of myself for not taking up studies so seriously which made me handicapped mentally! I will definitely do well in my next exams as my chandu desired.

They hugged each other.

Nandu said, Chandu I realised that nothing can be a good companion except books and a true friend which is a platform for success.

Pattu grandma ended the stroy with a touching modulations and said! "Kids" remember no harm in skipping food, sleep or comforts, Never postpone your studies for the next day.It will pollute your mind with laziness.

Grandma added "Kids" here is your sundal(pea nut) time.Delicious peanut sundal. Hey Hey all the kids were in a merry mood. They started singing songs.

Bye grandma - Take care They dispersed with eagerness for the next day's session.

Therapy Procedure
Early morning, after you get up from bed, (without even brushing your teeth) drink 1.5 liters of water i.e., 5 to 6 glasses. Let us all know that ancient Indians termed this therapy as "Usha Paana Chikitsa" . You may wash your face thereafter.
Here it is very essential to note that nothing else, neither drinks nor solid food of any sort should be taken within 1 hour before and after drinking these 1.5 liters of water. It is also to be strictly observed that no alcoholic drinks should be taken the previous night. If required, boiled and filtered water may be used for this purpose. It is difficult to drink 1.5 liters of water at one time, but you will get used to it gradually. Initially, while practicing you may drink four glasses first and to balance two glasses after a gap of two minutes. You may find the necessity to urinate 2 to 3 times within an hour, but it will become normal after quite some time.

By Research and Experience the following diseases are observed to be cured with this therapy within the indicated days as below:

Constipatio - 1 day
Acidity - 2 days
Diabetes - 7 days
Cancer - 4 weeks
Pulmonary TB - 3 months
BP & Hypertension - 4 weeks

Note:
It is advised that persons suffering from Arthritis or Rheumatism should practice this therapy thrice a day, i.e. morning, midday and night, 1 hour before meals for one week; and twice a day subsequently until the disease disappears.

How Does Pure Water Act?
Consuming ordinary drinking water by the right method purifies human body. It renders the colon more effective by forming new fresh blood, known in medical terms as " Haematopaises". That the mucous folds of the colon and intestines are activated by this method is an undisputed fact, just as the theory that the mucous fold produces new fresh blood.

If the colon is cleansed then the nutrients of the food taken several times a day will be absorbed and by the action of the mucous folds they are turned into fresh blood. The blood is all-important in curing ailments and restoring health and for this water should be consumed in a regular pattern.

If you are having difficulty in passing motion everyday morning try this, drink few glasses of water and wait for few mins. It really works, I have personally tried it...

Life is Short, Just go for it

Please forward this message to your friends, relatives and neighbors. It is a great service to the cause of humanity.

Never Quit

*When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.*

*Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow*

*Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.*

All about MIGRAINE

What is Migrane?
Migraine is a severe headache that's often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. The precise cause in unclear, however it is thought to be related to a fall in the levels of Serotonin- a chemical neurotransmitter in the Brain.

There are two types:
  • Classical - the headache is preceded by an aura when symptoms such as seeing flashing lights, temporary visual loss, speech problems or numbness of the face or arms may occur

  • Common - no aura precedes the headache
What happens?
Both types of migraine often start with changes in mood and feelings of hunger or food cravings.

Migraine attacks last from four to 72 hours and are usually felt on one side of the head. During this time sufferers usually need to lie down in a quiet and darkened room since the throbbing headache is often made worse by movement, noise and light.

Why does it happen?
Changes in the size of blood vessels and the levels of neurotransmitter substances (chemical messengers) in the brain are thought to be responsible for migraines. In particular, a fall in the levels of the brain chemical serotonin is believed to be responsible for the dilatation (widening) of the blood vessels that causes the throbbing headache.

Many factors can trigger migraines including:
  • tiredness

  • stress

  • dehydration

  • missed or delayed meals

  • certain food and drinks - cheese, chocolate, coffee, tea, alcohol
Can one stop it?
Migraine can't be cured but it can be kept under control. Maintaining a diary – each time the symptoms occur, helps to identify triggers that can then be avoided.
Some men find that taking medicines early in the attack reduces the severity and duration of the attack.

When Should one see a Doctor?
A doctor should be consulted, if:
  • Medication (painkillers) purchased from the pharmacist is not helping or attacks are coming more frequently

  • There's a change from usual migraine symptoms
Treatments
  • Avoid any identified triggers

  • Take painkillers as suggested by the doctor

  • Painkillers combined with anti-sickness medication

  • Medication that restores the normal levels of serotonin

  • Acupuncture, Osteopathy, Yoga, Relaxation or Homeopathy may help

21 Ways To Relieve Stress

By Garrett J. Braunreiter, GHF's Success Coach

At the turn of the century -- before the fax, modem, computer and cellular phone era -- the average American workweek was 60 hours long. By 1970, it was down to 37 hours. In the 1990s, the average worker puts in 46 hours a week at the office and six more at home for a total of 52 hours, according to a recent survey. In addition, 40 percent of those surveyed said they'd work up to 10 more hours for extra pay, adding up to 62 hours -- two hours longer than in the horse-and-buggy days.

Thus most people feel they experience less leisure time and more daily stress as they juggle a career, family, friends, perpetual to-do lists, goals, and their community. In spite of life's demands, there are some simple and effective steps which can reduce daily pressures. Here are 21 ways you can lower your stress each day:

  1. Begin the day with Power Questions rather than jumping out of bed and rushing to start your day, take a few minutes--from five to 15--to ask yourself these questions:
    • What am I happy about in my life now?

    • What am I excited about in my life now?

    • What am I proud about in my life now?

    • What am I enjoying most in my life right now?

    • What am I committed to in my life right now?

    • Answer these questions, to yourself, out loud, or write them down to start your day in the right frame of mind, and to remind you of how today is perfect.

  2. Go somewhere else for lunch. Get out of the office and enjoy your noon meal at a park. Use this time to be with nature. Try this once or twice a week, especially now that the weather is getting warmer. Eat slowly, enjoy your meal, and relish the fresh air to rejuvenate you.

  3. Remember, you WILL make mistakes. They're called lessons. And you learn from lessons, yes? Many people are forever beating themselves up because they had forgot a meeting, forgot their lunch, only worked out for 20 minutes, had a piece of coffee cake, or didn't complete their to-do list.
The important thing to remember is: we all make mistakes, and will make mistakes. It's our job to focus on SOLVING or LEARNING from the problem or mistake, not wallow in it.

  4. Carry the serenity prayer with you. (Got this idea from a client.) This 25-word prayer, written years ago by Professor Rein hold Nebular at Union Theological Seminary in New York, has helped many people regain balance in their lives: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to knowthe difference." Carry those words with you and memorize them.

  5. Give yourself a much deserved pat on the back. Each day, take a moment to pat yourself on the back for all the things you did. This will shift your perspective, helping you appreciate the great balancing act you pull off daily working, parenting, volunteering, maintaining a social life, caring for elders, etc.

  6. Create an image of peace in your mind. Several times during your workday, pause briefly to create a peaceful image in your mind. For example, picture yourself flying (NOT in a plane, but YOU flying over mountains, meadows, forests, oceans, gently gliding across the sky, admiring the view below. The more you practice this technique, the easier you will relieve daily stresses.

  7. Read. Reading is a great way to escape, educate yourself, and expand your horizons for personal and professional growth. If your life is hectic, this is a great way to relieve stress. You're now doing something for YOU. Read at lunch time, in the evening (instead of watching TV), in bed before you go to sleep. Consider using audio books that you can listen to on your way to and from work.

  8. Smile. Greet everyone with a smile. This will make others feel good about being with you. In turn, smiling will give you a deep sense of ease, calm and peace.

  9. Check how you breathe. Are you breathing deeply? When we are relaxed, our breathing is slow and even. However, when we are anxious or upset our breathing becomes shallow. When you notice yourself becoming stressed, say to yourself, "Stop." As you breathe in, repeat the word "peace," or say something that brings peace to you. As you breathe out, smile. Meanwhile, let your shoulders drop and your hands relax. Repeat this sequence several times.

  10. EXERCISE!!! Experts note that exercise is effective in burning the excess adrenaline that fuels feelings of anxiety and stress. Exercise also releases endorsing, the body's natural chemicals which block anxiety and pain. So take a brisk walk during your lunch hour or get your butt to the gym for a stress- busting weightlifting workout. Head to the gym after work to "work off" the stress of your day.

  11. Think positively. During a day when you face a crisis, think "challenge." Remember, it's all in your PERCEPTION of the situation that determines how stressful it is. Approaching any stressful event in this manner will positively boost your energy. So the next time you face a conflict, think in positive terms. When you face an obstacle, think "opportunity."

  12. Put yourself in the other person's shoes. Try to see a conflict or difference of opinion from another person's point of view. The other person is right, too. When you see the situation from the other side's view, you gain a different perspective, and quite possibly a solution. Most of the time you'll find your anger disappearing.

  13. Beware of what you drink. The coffee or soda you drink throughout the day can be a mental health nightmare. Too much caffeine can cause shaky hands, restlessness and irritability, all of which increase stressful feelings.

  14. Do the very best you can, right now. This is another way of learning to be less-than-perfect. Trying to be perfect leads to destructive behavior and procrastination. In other words, commit to completing your task or project by giving your all. That's EXCELLENCE - the commitment to completion. Just do it.

  15. Just say, "No." You don't have to accept every project, invitation to become involved or every opportunity to attend a meeting. You're not a prisoner to your phone or your friends. Acknowledge what you want and don't want to do. Say, "No, thank you," to requests you don't want to accept. Period.

  16. Interrupt your disruptive habits with "peace" habits. As soon as you begin to feel angry, hostile, cynical, skeptical, irritable or impatient, repeat a word that can offset the negative energy. Some examples include "peace," "love," "hope," "faith," "joy," "patience," etc.

  17. Reminisce happy memories. Tap into the power of your memories. In a time of stress, look back and remember a pleasant experience or satisfying moment that brought you great joy. Your wedding, the birth of your child, a time where you were publicly recognized for an achievement. Relive them for the purposes of helping you feel better.

  18. Listen to the music. The right music can take you from a highly intense state to a relaxed state in a short time. The right music is generally instrumental rather than vocal and tends to be performed by instruments such as flute, harp, piano and string ensembles. Many people find the sounds of nature combined with musical harmonies to be very relaxing.

  19. Simplify your life, dramatically. Permanently cut out 3 projects, tasks, responsibilities, shoulds, coulds, wants, goals, habits, or routines that are not necessary. Delegate or systematize 12 tasks, activities and habits that you don't think much about, but that waste your life away. Go deep with this. Even go as far as tossing out your personal to-do list!

  20. Don't bring work problems home. Leave your cares behind at the office. You and your family will feel better, and you will return to work refreshed, energetic and more creative. Saki F. Santorelli, Ed.D., assistant professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, offers these tips: "At the end of the workday, sit quietly and consciously make the transition from work to home. Take a moment to simply be, enjoying the moment. You may feel as if you're heading into your next full-time job--home. When you pull into the driveway or park on the street, take a minute to orient yourself to entering your home and being with family members. Try changing out of your work clothes when you get home. This simple act might help you make a smoother transition into your next 'role.'"

  21. End your day with Power Questions. Same concept as #1, however, use these questions:
    • What have I given today?

    • What did I learn today?

    • How has today added to the quality of my life or how can I use today as an investment in my future?

    • What can I do right now to turn myself/this situation around?
You may also add the Power Questions from #1. Suggestion: start journaling. You can effectively "close" the day on a high note and be refreshed for tomorrow.

Finally, keep in mind these tips and techniques are simply general guidelines. Allow your own sense of possibility and curiosity to evolve as you explore and discover your own techniques to reduce stress during the workday.

Apart from all these just do one thing to relieve your stress, and is nothing but do Meditate.

The Soldier and Horse

A soldier took the utmost pains to care his horse. As long as the war lasted, he looked upon horse as his fellow-helper in all emergencies and fed him carefully with hay and corn. But when the war was over, he only allowed him chaff to eat and made him carry heavy loads of wood, and ill treated. War was again proclaimed. The Soldier put on horse its military trappings, and mounted, being clad in his heavy coat of mail. The Horse fell down straightway under the weight, no longer equal to the burden, and said to his master:
"You must now go to the war on foot, for you have transformed me from a Horse into a Donkey; and how can you expect that I can again turn in a moment from a Donkey to a Horse?"

MORAL: Use the skill judiciously.

How do we celebrate Tamil New Year

First and foremost அனைத்து தமிà®´் நெஞ்சங்களுக்குà®®் எனது இனிய தமிà®´் புத்தண்டு நல் வாà®´்த்துக்கள்.

Thru this article I shall write a little about how we celebrate Tamil New Year, when I was living in our village during my childhood days. It has been many years since I have lived such a life and I hope to bring back you all the same way I used to celebrate when I was Young. If you have lived similar village life of mine, Please add your comments if you find something is missing.

Once we have taken bath before the sun rise we pray to Sun god in the early morning as it is a new beginning of the year, believed to have a good source of energy delivered. We also go to temple and pray to God. After that we pray at home and then we will go to our paddy field. In there we perform pooja with all the auspicious items by placing them in the Esaani Moolai ( South East Corner) at the paddy field. Then we make few rounds to loosen the sand with yer or kalappai (wooden item used to loosen sand). It is believed that doing so in New Year will give a good cultivation result(அதாà®™்க, நல்ல மகசூல் அல்லது சாகுபடி).

Then we all will come back and have good meals on that day, but only vegetarian diet is followed. On this day is a big revenue making day for all kids as all the elderly people will bless all small kids with small amount of money as well. Those small kids who needs to be taught to learn how to write also they practice them by holding their hand with basic letters in Tamil. Local shop owners they will open a new day book account note as its believed that it will also yield them a good revenue in the whole year.

Later in the evening all the people including village president and other village administrative people and the residents will join together to listen to the reading of Vackya Panjangam.

Followed by this we also have a Festival called Chithirai Festival and we eat Nila Choru (moon rice) on chitra Pournami (The First pournami of the Tamil New Year). I will try to post some interesting pictures taken during the last Chithirai Festival and information related to the celebration during that period. Please wait for just two more weeks.

à®…à®®்புட்டு தாà®™்கோ... If you wanna say anything more please do so...

21 ways to burn fat

This article might be very useful to those who sits on chair 8 hours minumum and storing more and more fat on their body everyday. If you are one among them try implementing these ways and burn your fat.

  1. Stock up on green tea
  2. Green tea isn't known only for its cancer-fighting benefits: It may help boost your metabolism, too. People who took green-tea extract three times a day saw their metabolic rate increase by about 4 percent, according to a study published in the December 1999 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. (Translation: You could burn an extra 60 calories a day, which equals about six pounds a year!) It may be because green tea contains catechins, which increase levels of the metabolism-speeding brain chemical norepinephrine, says Joy Bauer, a New York City nutritionist and author of Cooking with Joy.

  3. Pump iron
  4. Weight training is the ultimate way to burn calories fast. "A pound of muscle burns up to nine times the calories of a pound of fat," explains Richard Cotton, M.A., chief exercise physiologist for myexerciseplan.com. Weight training increases your resting metabolic rate, which is the number of calories you burn while sitting on your butt. What's more, it gives your metabolism an added boost after you exercise: It remains in overdrive for up to two hours after the last bench press, according to a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Strapped for time? Try these quick moves: squats, bench step-ups, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups and crunches. In a pinch, just do single sets of 10 for each exercise — you'll get optimal results for the time invested.

  5. Eat iron
  6. Yeah, we just told you to pump iron, but you also need to eat it. "If you don't have enough of this mineral, your body can't get enough oxygen to your cells, which slows down your metabolism," explains Samantha Heller, R.D., a nutritionist at the New York University Medical Center. Most multivitamins contain around 18 mg (the RDA for adults); you can also get your fill by eating three to four daily servings of foods rich in iron, such as lean red meat, chicken, fortified cereal and soy nuts. If you are feeling symptoms such as fatigue and weakness, ask your doctor to test you for anemia (it's a simple blood test) at your next physical.

  7. Order water — and ask for a refill
  8. A new German study found that when you drink 17 ounces of water (about two glasses) within a certain time frame, your metabolic rate shoots up by about 30 percent. Using these results, they estimate that by increasing your current water intake by 1.5 liters a day, a person would burn an extra 17,400 calories a year, resulting in about a five-pound weight loss.

  9. Get your thyroid checked
  10. Suspect you have a sluggish metabolism? You might have hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland, which afflicts about 25 percent of American women — many of whom don't know they have the condition, according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. "The thyroid gland controls your body's metabolism, so one of the first signs that it may be off is an inability to lose weight," explains Peeke. Your doctor can determine if you're suffering from hypothyroidism by running a blood test. If you do have an underactive thyroid, you'll be treated with a synthetic thyroid supplement, which you will need to take for the rest of your life (it will return your metabolism to normal, so it should be easier to lose weight).

  11. Avoid alcohol
  12. Want to keep your favorite meals from going straight to your hips (thighs, belly)? Wash them down with water, not wine. Alcohol slows your metabolism by depressing the central nervous system. A British study found that when alcohol was added to a high-fat, high-calorie meal, less dietary fat was burned off and more was stored as body fat.

  13. Rev up your workouts
  14. Interval training — in which you add bursts of high-intensity moves into your workout — is a surefire metabolism booster, says Glenn Gaesser, Ph.D., director of the Kinesiology Program at the University of Virginia and author of The Spark. Researchers at Laval University in Quebec found that high-intensity interval training burns more fat than regular, consistent aerobic exercise. If you usually jog at a 10-minute-mile pace, for example, add a 30-second sprint every five minutes. Or add a one-minute incline to your treadmill workout every five minutes. "Even if you just have 10 minutes for a quick workout, you can walk at a normal pace and then add in a 30-second bout of speed-walking every three minutes," recommends Gaesser.

  15. Do more dairy
  16. Women who ate low-fat dairy products, such as nonfat yogurt and low-fat cheese, three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters, according to a study published in the journal Obesity Research . "Calcium serves as a switch that tells your body to burn excess fat faster," explains study author Michael Zemel, M.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Sorry, but you won't reap the same benefits from calcium-fortified O.J. Research shows that you get the best results from dairy products themselves, not fortified foods. Aim for 1,200 mg, which includes about three servings of dairy a day.

  17. Take up a new sport
  18. Are you like Old Faithful when it comes to your morning walk or evening jog? Know this: The more you do an activity, the more your body adapts to it, so you burn fewer calories. If you want to light a fire under your metabolism, consider cross-training. For example, if you normally walk, try biking instead. "Since you're not used to working all those different muscles, it's a more intense workout, which can translate into a greater metabolic after-burn because your body is working harder to recover and get oxygen to all your tissues," says Carol Espel, M.S., an exercise physiologist for Equinox Fitness Clubs in New York City.

  19. Go fish
  20. Break out the lemon wedges: Regular fish eaters tend to have lower levels of the hormone leptin — good because high levels of leptin have been linked to low metabolism and obesity, says Louis Aronne, M.D., an obesity specialist at the New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. Try to consume three to four servings of a fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna or mackerel, each week.

  21. Say ommm
  22. Stress may contribute to abdominal fat, according to several studies, including a recent one at the University of California, San Francisco. "When you're stressed, hormones like cortisol stimulate your appetite, slow your metabolism down and encourage fat storage inside your abdomen," explains Shawn Talbott, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Clinic at the University of Utah. So what's a frazzled girl to do? "Find an activity that reduces stress for you, whether it's listening to soothing music or taking yogic practise, and do it daily," advises Talbott.

  23. Have a PB & J
  24. Think peanut butter is only for pint-sized palates? Think again. PB is rich in magnesium, a mineral that motors up your metabolism by giving your cells energy. Aim for 320 mg a day of magnesium: Good food sources include a peanut butter sandwich made with whole-wheat bread (100 mg) or spinach (1/2 cup has 80 mg).

  25. Exercise off that PMS
  26. You could lose more weight exercising during the later phase of your menstrual cycle than at any other time in your cycle, according to a recent study from the University of Adelaide in Australia. Hormones estrogen and progesterone fire up your fat-burning furnace: They promote your body's use of fat as an energy supply, so more is burned off when you exercise. "Women burned about 30 percent more fat for the two weeks following ovulation to about two days before menstruation," explains study author Leanne Redman.

  27. Don't blow off breakfast
  28. Studies show that eating breakfast plays a part in successful weight loss — almost 80 percent of people who successfully keep weight off chow down on this meal, according to a study published in Obesity Research. "Your metabolism slows as you sleep, and the process of digesting food revs it up again," explains Heller. Aim for a 300- to 400-calorie breakfast, such as a high-fiber cereal (another metabolism booster) with skim milk and fruit.

  29. Pump up protein
  30. Not in an extreme, Atkins sort of way, but having a little protein at every meal fires up your metabolism. "Your digestive system uses more energy to break it down, so you burn more calories," explains Lisa Dorfman, R.D. However, keep protein levels to between 20 and 35 percent of your diet; eating too much of it can cause kidney strain and may cause your body to store too much fat.

  31. Snack away during the day
  32. Grazing is a surprisingly good idea because it helps you avoid metabolic slowdown. "Your body will be tricked into thinking it's constantly eating, so it will never slow your metabolism down," explains Bauer. Aim for five small meals (200 to 500 calories) a day rather than three large ones. Also try not to go more than four hours without eating — if you eat breakfast at 7am, for example, have a snack at 10am, lunch at noon, another snack at 3pm and dinner at 7pm.

  33. Skip the starch
  34. Carb crazy? Consider this: Refined carbohydrates, such as bread, potatoes and rice, create a surge in insulin that in turn drives down your resting metabolic rate, explains Aronne. "It's important to keep carbohydrates in your diet, but really focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains, which have less of an effect on insulin levels," he explains. And when buying whole-grain breads and cereals, make sure the first ingredient listed is whole wheat, whole oat or cracked wheat.

  35. Break up your workouts
  36. Try dividing your workouts into two shorter 20-minute sessions. You'll rev up your metabolism for an hour or two after each workout, which means you'll burn more calories than if you did one longer session. Don't have time? Even small bursts of activity will get your metabolism chugging again, according to a study in Nature. "Just a five-minute walk around the house every hour translates into an extra 200 to 300 calories burned every day," says Peeke.

  37. Pace while you're on the phone
  38. People who are constantly in motion — crossing and uncrossing their legs, stretching and pacing — burn more calories. When researchers at the Mayo Clinic asked subjects to eat an additional 1,000 calories a day for eight weeks, they found that only the nonfidgeters stored the calories as fat.

  39. Eat more bananas
  40. They're full of potassium, which revs up your metabolism by regulating your body's water balance, says vitamin expert Susan Lark, M.D., author of The Lark Letter. If you're dehydrated, you'll burn fewer calories. Make sure you're getting at least 2,000 mg: a banana has 450 mg, a cup of milk has 370 mg and an orange has 250 mg.

  41. Get enough z's
  42. Yeah, Russell Crowe may be on Letterman, but it's way more important for your waistline if you don't stay up. A study at the University of Chicago Medical Center found that people who got only four hours of sleep had much more difficulty processing carbs. The culprit? Increased levels of insulin and the stress hormone cortisol. "When you're exhausted, your body lacks the energy to do its normal day-to-day functions, which includes burning calories efficiently," says Talbott. So the best way to make sure your metabolism runs smoothly is to get six to eight hours of shut-eye each night.

The World's First All-glass Undersea Restaurant Opens

The Maldives : 15 April, Marks the day that the first ever all-glass undersea restaurant in the world opens its doors for business at the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. Ithaa* will sit five meters below the waves of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a vibrant coral reef and encased in clear acrylic offering diners 270-degrees of panoramic underwater views.

"We have used aquarium technology to put diners face-to-face with the stunning underwater environment of the Maldives", says Carsten Schieck, General Manager of Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. "Our guests always comment on being blown away by the colour, clarity, and beauty of the underwater world in the Maldives, so it seemed the perfect idea to build a restaurant where diners can experience fine cuisine and take time to enjoy the views - without ever getting their feet wet."

Created by MJ Murphy Ltd, a design consultancy based in New Zealand, Ithaa's distinctive feature is the use of curved transparent acrylic walls and roof, similar to those used in aquarium attractions. "The fact that the entire restaurant except for the floor is made of clear acrylic makes this unique in the world," continues Schieck, "We are currently planting a coral garden on the reef to add to the spectacular views of the rays, sharks and many colourful fish that live around the area.

The Fox and The Goat

A Fox fell into a deep pit from which he could not get out. A Goat passed by shortly afterwards, and asked the Fox what he was doing down there.

"Oh, have you not heard?" said the Fox; "there is going to be a great hunting, so I jumped down here as this sounds safe and good hideout. Why don't you come down too?"

The Goat thought well of this advice, and jumped down into the pit.

The Fox immediately jumped on her back, and by putting his foot on her long horns managed to jump up to the edge of the pit. "Good-bye, friend," said the Fox, "if you had brains equal to the number of hairs in your beard you would not have jumped down without a way back up."
